Day 17: Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

dishwasher detergentI found this great homemade dishwasher detergent recipe from Young House Love. I had most of the ingredients on hand anyway (since I had bought Borax for making my own Laundry Detergent).

You will need:

  • 2 c. borax
  • 2 c. baking soda
  • 4 little packages of unsweetened lemon Kool-Aid (or generic)

Mix together and store. You can substitute ½ c. of citric acid for the Kool-Aid but it’s harder to find.

Doesn’t look too interesting when mixed together:

The results?

Well, I wasn’t too impressed. Some dishes came out sparkling and others didn’t. I’ve not been to happy with recent results in my dishwasher anyway, so I’m thinking I need to cycle some vinegar through my dishwasher  to clean it up. Also, it might have been placement of some dishes. I don’t know.

So, I’m going to clean my dishwasher out, then try another load and let you know how it goes!!

What have you used for dishwasher detergent?

Hi Betsy – I’ll have to give the dishwasher soap a try – about how much money does it cost per load? We always put a mug right side up in the top rack of the dishwasher & put about 1/2 cup of white vinegar in it when we wash a load of dishes. Our glasses/silverware come out sparkling clean with no rinse aid ever needed.

I’ve heard of using the Lemon flavored Kool-Aid as a way to clean your dishwasher between washes, but I haven’t tried it yet. So far I just use Cascade, but I’m interested in your second try results.

Maybe you should use washing soda instead of baking soda.I make my own dishwasher detergent with washing soda. Having good luck so far. Only about 1/4 thru a gallon in 3 months.
